About Us

Our Story

The 1920's:
Established by Mr M Waterman, father of the famous pianist Dame Fanny Waterman, the store gained an impeccable reputation for second hand jewellery, clocks and full repair service, as well as a fully licensed pawnbroker. For many locals Waterman's soon became the jeweller of choice and a loyal customer base was built over the years.

The 1970's and early 1980's:
The store changed hands a few times since then but has kept all its original values. Mr. Moran ran the shop from 1975 and then Mr. Piters took over in 1981, they both built on the well-established reputation and increased the emphasis on antique jewellery and clocks, making this the mainstay of the store, with antique dealers from across the country visiting Mr Piters regularly until his retirement in the mid 1980's.

The mid 1980's:
Waterman's regained it reputation for second hand jewellery, and increased its emphasis on the pawn broking service under the new leadership of Mr Menachem Raphael F.G.A, D.G.A, who is the existing proprietor.

The 1990's:
As a diamond merchant and the most qualified gemmologist in Leeds city centre, holding both the F.G.A and D.G.A diplomas, Menachem evolved the emphasis of the store from the 9ct gold chains it was famous for, to fine quality diamond jewellery, and in particular engagement rings and larger premium pieces.

Waterman's Today:
The store today is very vibrant, offering a wide spectrum of services and niches. Second hand jewellery is still an important part of the business but we are better known as wedding ring specialists and bespoke specialists, manufacturing exclusive designs in 18ct gold and platinum. Since 2001 we have offered our service to trade clients and now directly supply over 50 retailers from Truro to Newcastle, to Edinburgh and County Cork. More recently we have gained exclusive UK distribution rights to fine quality silver jewellery and are increasing its representation in major cities.
